The club's decline led to relegation twice in three years in the 1990s, spending the 1998–99 season in the third tier of English football for the first and only season in their 117 year history. Birmingham fans consider their main rivals to be Aston Villa, their nearest neighbours geographically, with whom they contest the Second City derby. According to a 2003 Football Fans Census survey, Aston Villa fans think of Birmingham City as their main rivals, though this has not always been the case.
